What is Low Ovarian Reserve? (Diminished Ovarian Reserve)

Acupuncture for Diminished Ovarian Reserve

Acupuncture for low ovarian reserve

Ovarian reserve is a term used to define the quantity and quality of follicles that are left in the ovary at a given time. The follicle is where the egg or oocyte, will develop.  Ovarian reserve can also describe the ability of the ovaries to release strong enough eggs to endure the fertilization process. Proper functioning of this process then results in a healthy pregnancy.

It is natural for women to become less fertile as they age. In recent years this has been more prevalent in much younger women. A diagnosis of diminished, low, or poor ovarian reserve can be an unexpected surprise and stressful one.  There are many more women today with difficulties conceiving; you are not alone.

Low ovarian reserve may arise due to:

  • age
  • trauma or injury
  • genetic predisposition
  • disease

They say a women is born with all the eggs she will ever have, but that doesn’t mean that we cannot change the health of those eggs that remain. There are many things in our environment today that play a large role in the acceleration of the reproductive clock.

  • high stress levels
  • poor sleep habits
  • unhealthy eating
  • caffeine and alcohol consumption
  • smoking
  • environmental toxins
  • work/life imbalance

These live-fast lifestyles enable our bodies to age much quicker than necessary. Let us help get you into a better routine to help preserve your fertility!

How can Acupuncture help?

Acupuncture has been shown to improve the functioning of the ovaries,  and help to balance the hormones that stimulate the ovarian follicles.  It can also increase blood flow to the uterus which promotes the thickening the uterine lining for implantation.  It works with the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to turn off that fight-or-flight response and get you back into a rest-and-relax relationship with your body. This can help tremendously if you are suffering from anxiety and stress due to fertility issues.

Typically treatments to encourage healthy egg maturity begin about 90 days before ovulation.  These preconception treatments give the body enough time to renew the cells that make up the egg. Through improvements in diet, lifestyle and stress reduction, we can further stabilize the body and create the most optimal environment for the egg before it is released.  This requires a great deal of will-power and commitment from the patient, but very much worth it! The body is very capable of healing itself given the proper direction.

A healthy, happy you is the first step to a healthy happy baby!

There is hope! Don’t get discouraged! Although a very time sensitive matter, studies show it may be possible to slow down ovarian aging and also reverse this process. A woman can influence her fertility.
